| The following message
information was received from Paul Rayner of the Ecclesbourne Valley
Railway Association - Their website on www.evra.org.uk
is well worth a visit.
Dear Sir,
I notice in your
Link magazine Iss.66 'Sights of Sites' you refer to the
Wirksworth engine shed as a very ramshackle affair.
Fair comment, ramshackle it certainly is. Perhaps
a few words here and a couple of attached pictures will clarify
somewhat.
The first picture (taken 24th June)
visually fits your description whereas the second picture (16th August)
shows the reality of what is happening at Wirksworth station. The
third photograph is a map of Wirksworth circa 1899 showing the
position of the original shed.
The engine shed is
in fact a structure erected some 30/40 years ago to allow limestone
dust to be transferred from lorries which had driven up an adjacent
ramp to tip directly into wagons on the line within this structure -
'the dust dock'. It is almost roofless now and is more of a security
compound than a shed for overnight storage of our 3 Ruston diesel
shunters and 2 man-riders.
There was
originally an engine shed some few hundred yards away from this
location but was dismantled many years ago. We aim to build again
eventually but other more urgent work is in hand and consumes much of
our financial resources.
For EVRA, Best regards,
Paul Rayner
